St. Oswald’s Church

It is probable that a church stood on this spot from Saxon times as indicated by the dedication to the Northumbrian King Oswald, killed in battle AD 642. However the earliest identifiable parts of the existing structure are the Norman nave, pillars and arches dating from the times of the Conqueror’s son-in-law, the Earl of Warrenne. In 1085 the church was mentioned in the Domesday Book.

The south and slightly later north Aisles were added before 1200; the mediaeval chancel dates from around 1400 as dose the delicately carved oak screen.

In the north east corner of the church , stands the sepulchral of Archbishop William Rokeby, a former rector of this Parish who died in Dublin 1521. It is thought that the tower and porch are of much later date, probably 18th or 19th Century.

Major alterations to the church were made in 1935 when the tower was lowered, and the chancel re-roofed. In the same rebuilding, the oak screen was moved to its present location and the vestry was added. An interesting aspect to the church is that it is not a monument to one period of building but, as the former Parish Church, has evolved to meet the changing needs of its congregation.

The church closed for regular worship in 1978 coincident with the opening of the new church in Edenthorpe. (Text taken from “Shepherd’s Watch” Issue 7 published by the Parish of Kirk Sandall And Edenthorpe.)

The church at the bottom of Sandall Lane is at present in the care of The Church Conservation Trust.

With more and more houses being built in the area it would be nice to see the church in use although this would bring problems of cash and car parking.
